I read the excerpt “A FAREWELL TO ARMS” by Hemingway and got to the conclusion that the correct answer is “INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION”.

While direct characterization is when the author explicitly of specifically describes the character, indirect characterization is the exact opposite of that. It is when the author instead of easily describes the character, it does it by showing his/ habits or characteristics without describing them in a specific or explicitly way.

We see the indirect characterization in the excerpt when the author talks about how the character goes to the drivers and offers them cigarettes and Macedonia. It makes the reader think how generous the character is or was in that moment.
