In Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth (1623), after Macbeth and Banquo defeat two invading armies, three witches predict that Macbeth will be made Thane of Cawdor and will also become King of Scotland. They also prophesy that Banquo will not be a king but he will be the father of a line of kings. Macbeth becomes the Thane of Cawdor shortly after the witches predict that, which provokes changes in Macbeth's character.
