in his famous speech at the march on washington in 1963, dr. martin luther king jr. said, “i have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” theodore taylor published the cay six years later, in 1969. the dedication to the novel read: “to dr. king’s dream, which can only come true if the very young know and understand.” what does taylor want young people to “know and understand”? how will this dr. king’s dream come true? explain what the dedication means and how the message of the book is connected to dr. king’s dream. use at least two details from the novel to support your answer.

Theodore Taylor's novel The Cay is a story about overcoming prejudice, and being able to see beyond actual sight. The dedication in his novel, suggests that the story is going to be about issues of equality among races.

In the novel, Phillip is forced to leave his father behind and board a ship with his mother, in order to escape from the war. While they are on the ship, they suffer from a torpedo attack by the Germans. As a consequence of the blast, Phillip is blinded, and he ends up on a raft with a black West Indian man called Timothy, and a cat named Stew Cat. Eventually, Timothy steers the draft onto an island, even though Phillips thinks staying at sea is better. On the island, Timothy builds a shelter and finds food. There is a growing tension between the two characters until Phillip finally realizes that Timothy is only trying to help, and they decide to work together to survive. Phillip becomes Timothy's friend, and asks him to call Phillip by his name.

As they become closer, and even though Phillip is blind, he becomes more independent, and empowered. After a storm, Timothy is severely injured from trying to protect Phillip from debris and wind, and eventually he dies. Phillip gives his friend proper burial, and he realizes the only way to survive is by making a plane aware of where he is. He manages to make dark smoke to call a pilot's attention, and he and Stew Cat are rescued. An operation in New York miraculously cures Phillip blindness, and he returns home. His friend Henrik seems to young for him now, and he decides he wants to be friends with the black West Indian people who remind him of Timothy.

In the novel Phillip knows and understands that prejudice and bigotry towards people of different races is unfounded. But it takes his becoming blind to realize that people are not really that different. Once he loses his sight he is really able to see that there is no fundamental difference between people based solely on their appearance. It is the nature of their being, their character, that makes them worth of judgement. And it is not until people learn to see beyond their sight, that cases of racism will stop.

wordsworth is stating that nature no longer interests mankind, that the latter is not “moved” by it and explains that ancient western paganism had a more positive attitude concerning nature since it lacked the perv erted judaeo-christian interpretation of having received the world and all its animals and elements from god to use as we , instead of humans actually being not only part of nature but its wardens, meant to appreciate it and protect it.

have sight of proteus coming from the sea;

or hear old triton blow his wreathed horn.”

wordsworth here make it very clear that by actually looking and contemplating nature, human beings would reconnect with happiness, serenity and purpose. the use of mythological figures is quite evocative as well, proteus is a greek mythological god of the changing sea. he personifies the sea that changes, which symbolizes the way nature changes and inevitably can change to be destructive not only due to natural causes but to human pollution. furthermore, the sea is even more symbolic since all life originated in the sea so it is not only our past but our future since no life form in our planet can survive without water and if all water is destroyed in earth all life will be gone as well.

he then uses triton which is symbolic of the synthesis of both nature and mankind. triton is a mythological greek god that has the upper body of a man and the lower body of a fish (a merman). this human fish duality evokes the fact that humans are not only human but also part of nature, the fish tail representing nature. the main attribute of this god was that he used a conch shell as a horn to calm the roaring seas. in other words, triton uses nature through science for the benefit of human sailors who risk death during tempests. with the use of such metaphor, wordworth is conveying the message that human technology   is supposed to use nature to preserve nature and thereby humanity as well.
