Natural imagery.

Explanation: Many are the Modernist characteristics in Storm, by H.D. The natural imagery, however, outstands. Imagist as she was, she uses nature to create a visual image of her poetry. She says "you crack the live branch - the branch is white, the green is crushed" as she was describing a tree, a branch a leaf. In these verses, we can feel all the pessimism and disillusionment the poet expresses and so the poetry takes an autumnal tone, the base for realism.  The fact that she used nature to talk about her feelings is also another important characteristic of Modernism. The poet is free to be inspired by anything and everything and so railway trains, telephones, trees are great subjects for poetic composition.

Modern poets have also decided to be free in the use of meter. Hilda's poems are short and straight to the point. The final verse of Storm is simply "a green stone". Just like she does in other poems, she uses a short sentence, sometimes only one word, and creates a visual around it. She uses the kinesthetic imagery to evoke emotions from the readers and to help them to follow the sensations that she describes. Also, in the tone of the poem, we can find some realism. The realism in modern poetry was a reaction to the romanticism of the predecessor century. The modern poet sees and depicts life as it is with all its pain and ugliness. That's what Hilda Doolittle does in Storm.
