1. heck tate says: “there’s a black boy dead for no reason, and the man responsible for it’s dead. let the dead bury the dead this time, mr. finch. let the dead bury the dead.” what does he mean?

in to kill a mockingbird by harper lee, heck tate says, “there’s a black boy ded for no reason, and the man responsible for it’s ded. let the ded bury the ded this time, mr. finch. let the ded bury the ded.”(369) atticus finch was defending the innocence of the african american tom robinson who was accused of rapeing mayella ewell. "i got somethin' to say an' then i ain't gonna say no more. that ni yonder took advantage of me an' if you fine fancy gentlemen don't wanta do nothin' about it then you're all yellow stinkin' cowards, stinkin' cowards, the lot of you. your fancy airs don't come to nothin'—your ma'amin' and miss mayellerin' don't come to nothin', mr. finch-"(251) mayella was continuing on with her testimony saying that tom robinson beat and rapd her when tom robinson was innocent. “seventeen bullet holes in him. they didn’t have to shoot him that much”(315) tom robinson was accused of trying to escape the jail and the guards shot him seventeen times and killed him.
bob ewell was set on the idea that he needed to get back at atticus finch because he told the truth while trying to prove that tom robinson was in fact innocent. though atticus was only telling the truth bob thought that he was ridiculed and humiliated by mr. finch. bob decided to go after jem and scout after the halloween program to get back at atticus. “heck? atticus finch. someone’s been after my children.” (353) boo radley has seen bob going after the children and saved their lives. “bob ewell’s lyin’ on the ground under that tree down yonder with a kitchen knife stuck up under his ribs. he’s ded, mr. finch” (357) during the struggle boo managed to stab bob ewell with a knife. bob ewell was the reason that tom robinson was trialed for rap of mayella and the reason that tom was now ded. mr. tate was set on the idea that bob had fallen on the knife and killed himself. “mr. finch.” mr. tate was still planted to the floorboards. “bob ewell fell on his knife. i can prove it.” (366) mr. tate knew that bob was the reason for the miss treatment and the death of tom along with the injuries acquired to jem and scout.
