The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is an area that lies in the equatorial trough, a permanent low-pressure feature where surface trade winds converge. The zone is characterized by heat and moisture, increased convection, cloudiness and precipitation. The zone's position and structure influence ocean, atmosphere and land interactions and the Earth's climate on a global scale.
