The Most Dangerous Game is a short story written by Richard Cornell, published in 1924. The story itself revolves around Sanger Rainsford, a big-game hunter who, after falling overboard from a yacht and swimming to the nearby isolated island in the Caribbean, falls into the hands of a Russian aristocrat Zaroff and becomes "the hunted". This excerpt describes the moment Rainsford first saw Zaroff's castle on the seemingly uninhabited island. Literary devices like mood, imagery and foreshadowing are used here in order to create suspenseful and gloomy atmosphere. The mood in this excerpt is mysterious and dark, evoking the feeling of dread and unease in the reader. It is created through a dark setting which causes the reader to feel the upcoming danger. The author uses strong visual and tactile imagery by describing the lights, the image of an enormous chateau and the environment which surrounds it, as well as the feeling of touching the tall, spiked iron gate.
