Acute: having an understanding of something

Chronic: constantly reaccuring, ex. chronic illness

Acute: If you are talking about Medicine, it is a very severe, very sudden occurrence of something. Acute Leukemia is a bone marrow disease that if you get it, it is severe and practically untreatable with reliable results.

If you are talking about acute as an adjective, like acute shortage of food, the meaning is that the food situation better be attended to immediately.

If you are talking about very observant (as in sharp as a tack like Sherlock Holmes) then acute means very observant, very quick to put ideas together.

Chronic: disease as in Chronic Leukemia. Persisting for a very long time. Chronic Leukemia is much easier to live with that acute. The bone marrow is not working correctly but a patient can function normally with chronic diseases. They can be quite annoying but you don't normally die from them.

The general meaning is long lasting and persistent in our ability to deal with a problem as in a chronic problem that housing for everyone presents.
