Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Self-Reliance" essay is a transcendentalist work of utmost importance to society. In this essay Emerson states that the human being must, above all, avoid conformity and stagnation. Moreover, he states that the human being must move away from false statements and follow faithfully his conscience and his own truths.

Bringing this reasoning to the present world, we can conclude that Emerson on the one hand would be happy with the advance of technology. That's because technological advances take us out of stagnation, make us advance in thought and behavior. However, the advance of technology has brought us a dependence on current pop culture and social media that gets us stuck with false claims and controversial ideas, setting standards on our truths. This would leave Emerson disappointed because he would believe technology has led to the loss of humanity.
