The mood of the excerpt, is that of nervousness. You can feel the character's nervousness through his heart thumping in his chest and expressed that he knew he'd be caught. Nervousness is also felt as he ponders what to tell his family about why he'd be going to jail or how to explain what happened to him and the other character.
