eragon, a fantasy novel written by christopher paolini, starts out with fifteen-year-old eragon, who lives with his uncle and his cousin on a farm in a small village called carvahall. while hunting one day, eragon is led into a mountain range, where he finds a mysterious blue stone. curious, eragon keeps the stone for himself, until one night, when it begins to crack, revealing a baby blue dragon, whom eragon names saphira. it isn’t long before two strange men, known as ra’zac, appear in carvahall and begin to question the villagers about the blue stone. eragon and saphira flee the village for the night, but when they return, they find the farm burned to pieces and eragon’s uncle buried beneath all the debris. filled with fury, eragon sets out to avenge his uncle and begins to search for the two ra’zac with saphira. but before eragon leaves carvahall, he is caught by brom, the village storyteller, who tells eragon that he knows that eragon is a dragon rider, someone who has been chosen by a dragon. after brom requests it, eragon agrees to let him accompany them in his mission. eragon learns from brom that there used to be many more dragons, but that they were all murdered by galbatorix, the tyrant ruler of their world, alagaёsia. the trio is resting in a town called dras-leona one night, when they are attacked by the two ra’zac that killed eragon’s uncle. one of the ra’zac hurls a knife at eragon, but brom leaps forward and takes the knife in his own chest. just before he dies, brom explains to eragon that he knew so much about dragons because he used to be a dragon rider too, before his own dragon died. after brom dies, eragon’s purpose in his mission changes, and he no longer seeks to just get vengeance for his uncle. instead, he now wants to slay the evil king galbatorix and all his followers so that there might be peace in alagaёsia once again. as eragon and saphira resume their journey, they come across a group known as the varden, whose main purpose is to kill galbatorix. eragon and saphira stay with the varden until a group of creatures called urgals attack them. after eragon slays many urgals, he then goes to battle an evil magician named durza, who works for galbatorix. eragon and durza fight until eragon gets the upper hand and pierces durza in the heart. the book concludes with a mysterious and unknown voice calling to eragon in his head, promising answers to all of eragon’s questions. eragon responds with three words: “i will come.”

Read the excerpt from ernest hemingway’s “soldier's home.” his father was in the real estate business and always wanted the car to be at his command when he required it to take clients out into the country to show them a piece of farm property. the car always stood outside the first national bank building where his father had an office on the second floor. now, after the war, it was still the same car. nothing was changed in the town except that the young girls had grown up. how does hemingway’s description of the town as unchanged impact the readers’ perception of krebs? it emphasizes that while the town has remained the same, krebs has changed. it illustrates that krebs despises the town he grew up in because it is boring. it demonstrates that krebs views himself as similar to the other soldiers from his town. it reveals that krebs is jealous of those who were able to stay in town and avoid the war.
