Perhaps the biggest hurdle to the success of reconstruction was the failure of whites to accept the new position blacks had in this country. why would they have so much difficulty in accepting them?

Reconstruction has been a success because this was able to pass the amendments. The black Americans were no longer a slave, they lived in a knit families that white people no longer controlled, they already have the right to vote, they have established schools, churches, etc. they can enjoy what white Americans do. However, white Americans did not characterize Reconstruction as a success. They were convinced that black American people were their inferiors and are not prepared to participate in government. They have even concluded that this reconstruction is completely a mistake.
