Scenario: You are employed as a safety officer in a construction company in Hong Kong. An

accident happened in one of the construction sites with the following details:

A 20-year-old apprentice carried out the work of grinding a small workpiece using

an abrasive wheel in the construction site. He wore the safety helmet and eye

protector for the grinding work. The floor of the workplace was filled with

construction debris.

Before the grinding work, he picked the wheel from the bench and mounted it

himself in the abrasive wheel. The spindle speed and the wheel speed were found

500r. p.m. and 400r. p.m. respectively. The gap between work-rest and wheel was

adjusted to 5mm. The workpiece was held with a plier. Accidentally the workpiece

was jammed between the abrasive wheel and the machine guard. Then the abrasive

wheel burst into pieces and splashed out. The apprentice was then seriously hurt.
Potential things that could cost a company when an accident occurs.
1. Wages for injured worker per month = $12000 2. Medical cost = $8000
3. Compensation for worker = $20000
4. Loss of production / remedial work required = $8000
5. Overtime wages to cover lost production = $3000
6. Cost of new equipment = $1000
7. Wages of replacement workers = $5000
8. Cost of senior managements = $20000
9. Cost of completing paperwork due to accident = $2000
10. Legal expenses = $30000
11. Fines and court costs = $8000
12. Increase in employer’s liability insurance premiums = $6000
13. Any other cost. You may make your own assumption on the cost. List out the cost if the cost cannot be evaluated directly. Other assessment materials attached to this Assignment

Two flowing streams of argon gas are adiabatically mixed to form a single flow/stream. one stream is 1.5 kg/s at 400 kpa and 200 c while the second stream is 2kg/s at 500 kpa and 100 ? . it is stated that the exit state of the mixed single flow of argon gas is 150 c and 300 kpa. assuming there is no work output or input during the mixing process, does this process violate either the first or the second law or both? explain and state all your assumptions.
