Hooke's Law and Poisson's Ratio (12 points) At Rawley's Discount Materials Testing Emporium of Wonders, a client looking to save a few dollars wanted a test conducted in order to find the Poisson's Ratio for a material with elastic modulus, E = 210 GPa. A 200-mm long sample with square cross-section (20mm x 20mm) was subjected to an elastic axial load of 180 kN. The equipment to measure axial strain while the sample is in the testing apparatus fell behind the machine and no one wants to get back there to pick it up--so...the axial strain must be calculated. While the sample was still subjected to the load, the width and thickness was found to have both reduced by 0.015 mm (measured using a cheap Harbor Freight micrometer). As an overworked, unpaid intern on Rawley's staff, you sigh, roll your eyes, laugh at his jokes, and begrudgingly calculate the following values: 12 pts) Lateral Strain, E = ME [4 pts) Axial Strain, Eaxial = HE [4 pts) Poisson's Ratio, V =L 12 pts) Shear Modulus, G = GPS

Amass of m 1.5 kg of steam is contained in a closed rigid container. initially the pressure and temperature of the steam are: p 1.5 mpa and t 240°c (superheated state), respectively. then the temperature drops to t2= 100°c as the result of heat transfer to the surroundings. determine: a) quality of the steam at the end of the process, b) heat transfer with the surroundings. for: p1.5 mpa and t 240°c: enthalpy of superheated vapour is 2900 kj/kg, specific volume of superheated vapour is 0. 1483 m/kg, while for t 100°c: enthalpy of saturated liquid water is 419kj/kg, specific volume of saturated liquid water is 0.001043m/kg, enthalpy of saturated vapour is 2676 kj/kg, specific volume of saturated vapour is 1.672 m/kg and pressure is 0.1 mpa.
