Tamoxifen is administered in tablet form. Its manufacture starts by mixing two streams. The first stream contains tamoxifen powder (tam), corn starch (cs) and lactose (lac) in water. The second stream contains PVP solids also suspended in water. The water coming in from the PVP line constitutes 75% of the total water entering the mixer. After mixing, the slurry enters a dryer in which 94.2% of the total water fed to the mixer is evaporated. The wet powder leaving the dryer contains 9.8 wt% tamoxifen, 66.8% lac, 21.4% cs and equal parts of water and PVP. The wet powder is then compressed into tablets. To produce one hundred thousand tablets, 17 kg of wet powder is required.
A. Draw and completely label the process flow diagram.
B. Calculate the mass flow rates of each component in all streams.
C. Calculate the mass of tamoxifen powder you need to make 17,500 tablets.
