Propionic acid is diffusing through a 4.0 mm stagnant thick film of deuterium oxide (heavy water) at 298 K. At one end of the film, the concentration of propionic acid is 16.8 wt% and the solution density is rho1 = 1072.8 kg/m^3 . At the other end of the film the concentration of propionic acid is 6.8 wt% and rho2 = 1088.1 kg/m^3 . The diffusivity of propionic acid in deuterium oxide is 1.01 x 10^-9 m^2 /s. a. Calculate the steady-state flux Na.
b. Assuming the binary mixture is a dilute solution of propionic acid, calculate the steady-state flux NA.
c. Compare NA from part (a) and (b). What can you conclude about the system from this?
