Sam is enjoying a jawbreaker (spherical hard candy) with radius 12 mm. After sucking on it for 20 minutes, the radius has decreased to 9mm. Sam knows that when the radius of the jawbreaker is reduced to 2mm, he will have reached the crunchy center of the jawbreaker, and can bite down. a) One simple model states that the rate of decrease in the radius of the jawbreaker is inversely proportional to the square of the radius. Write a few sentences explaining why this might be an appropriate model.
b) Write an equation which expresses the relationship between the radius of the jawbreaker and the rate at which it shrinks, as described in part a). Be sure to define all variables and provide units!
c) Use your answer from part b) to write an equation that describes the radius of the candy as a function of time.
d) Based on your equation, how long will it take to reach the crunchy center of the jawbreaker? Write your answer as a complete sentence, with units!
e) How accurate do you think your model is? What are some potential limitations of this model?
