[Q3] A small-scale open cycle thermal power plant consists of a feed water supply system that
includes a steam generator, a hydraulic feed pump and an electric motor as shown in the
figure below. Water from a nearby natural reserve is required to be supplied to the
steam generator using a feed pump which is driven by an electric motor of 20,000 Watts
capacity and 89% efficiency. The rate of flow of water through the pump is 60 kg/s and
the diameters of the suction and the exhaust pipes of the pump are same. Determine:
a) The mechanical work delivered by the motor to the hydraulic pump.
b) The mechanical power gained by water in the hydraulic pump.
