For years, an engine company has designed direct-injection (i. e., no pre-chamber), high-compression ratio, turbocharged Diesel engines that operate with one fuel injection per cycle. Due to new advances in controls and injection technology, the company proposes a new Diesel engine incorporating a swirl pre-chamber and two fuel injections per cycle. The first (so called pilot) injection delivers a small of diesel fuel ahead of the main fuel injection. Assuming that at any given operating condition the total amount of fuel injected per cycle is the same for both engine designs and that the injection timing is optimized in both cases, answer the following questions:

1. Will the amount of heat released in the premixed combustion phase increase, decrease, or remain the same for the new engine, compared to the old design, as a result of the proposed modification(s)? Explain.

2. Will the new engine be easier or more difficult to start in cold weather as a result of the proposed modification(s)? Explain.

3. Will the probability of knock increase, decrease, or remain the same as a result of the proposed modification(s)? Explain.

Aloaded platform of total mass 500 kg is supported by a dashpot and by a set of springs of effective stiffness 72 kn/m. it is observed that when the platform is depressed through a distance x = 12.5 cm below its equilibrium position and then released without any initial velocity; it reaches its equilibrium position in the shortest possible time without overshoot. find the position and velocity of the loaded platform 0.10 sec. after its release. if a further load of 400 kg is added to the platform, find, i) the frequency of damped vibrations, and i) the amplitude of vibration after 2 complete oscillations, given that the initial amplitude is 15 cm.

Air is to be cooled in the evaporator section of a refrigerator by passing it over a bank of 0.8-cm-outer-diameter and 0.4-m-long tubes inside which the refrigerant is evaporating at -20°c. air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 0°c and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse pitches of sl- st 1.5 cm. there are 30 rows in the flow direction with 15 tubes in each row. determine (a) the refrigeration capacity of this system and (b) pressure drop across the tube bank. evaluate the air properties at an assumed mean temperature of -5°c and 1 atm. is this a good assumption?
