The pressure drop, Δpp, along a straight pipe of diameter D has been experimentally studied and it is observed that for laminar flow of a given fluid and pipe, the pressure drop varies directly with the distance, l, between pressure taps. Assume that Δpp is a function of D, and l, the velocity, V, and the fluid viscosity, µµ. Use dimensional analysis to deduce how the pressure drop varies with pipe diameter.

Amixture of slurry and mud is to be pumped through a horizontal pipe of diameter 500 mm. the fluid behaves as a bingham plastic with a yield stress of 30 pa and viscosity 0.04 pa.s. describe the effects of the shear stress through a transverse section of the pipe by plotting the variation in shear stress and velocity profile: (i) just before the slurry starts to move (ii) as the slurry flows when the pressure gradient is double that in part (i)

Air (c-1.006 kj/kg.k, r-0.287 kj/kg.k) enters a nozzle steadily at 280 kpa and 77°c with a velocity of 50 m/s and exits at 85 kpa and 320 m/s. the heat losses from the nozzle to the surrounding medium at 20°c are estimated to be 3.2 kj/kg. determine (a) the exit temperature and (b) the total entropy change for this process. solve this problem using constant specific heats.
