1. As a design engineer for a large heat exchanger manufacturing company, you are to provide a quick estimate on the size of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. The heat exchanger will be used to condense steam (1 atm) within the shell by raising the temperature liquid water from 20 to 90°C within the tubes. It is desired to transfer 600kW from the steam to the liquid water. The diameter of the tubes is 1 cm and the velocity of the liquid water is not to exceed 3 m/s. Determine: a) the mass flow rate of the liquid water, b) the minimum number of tubes required in this one-shell and two-tube-pass heat exchanger, c) the steam condensation rate, and d) the tube length required to transfer 600kW, if the tubes are thin-walled and minimum number of tubes are considered.

Air is to be cooled in the evaporator section of a refrigerator by passing it over a bank of 0.8-cm-outer-diameter and 0.4-m-long tubes inside which the refrigerant is evaporating at -20°c. air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 0°c and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse pitches of sl- st 1.5 cm. there are 30 rows in the flow direction with 15 tubes in each row. determine (a) the refrigeration capacity of this system and (b) pressure drop across the tube bank. evaluate the air properties at an assumed mean temperature of -5°c and 1 atm. is this a good assumption?
