A park in a valley was contaminated with the chemicals from an overturned truck. See below:

Contaminants of interest: a. Bromomethane b. Pentachlorphenol c. Acetic Acid

Site Characteristics:

Air volume: 10^9 m3

Soil volume: 1000 m3

Lake volume: 5.7 x 10^6 m3

Fish volume: 2.5 m3 (fish density: 1.5 g/cm3 )

Assume the park soil is a saturated silt clay loam soil with an organic fraction of 1.3%, which is saturated with a 0.479 porosity. The hydraulic gradient in the silt clay loam is 0.022 and averages a hydraulic conductivity of 0.05 cm/h and a soil density of 1.52 g/cm3 .

There was initially 25 kg of each chemical spilled. If the spill happened near enough to the lake that the runoff potentially carried it there, how would each of these contaminants partition into the lake, soil, air, and the rainbow trout in the lake?

Note that the valley is so enclosed that the air in the atmosphere can be assumed to remain stagnant in the park. The rainbow trout bioconcentration factor (BCF) can be estimated from the following equation: o = 0.76oKo − 0.23.

For all the three chemicals, the empirical equation by Kenaga and Goring (1980) based on 45 organics is used: log Koc = 0.544 logKo + 1.377.
