In water-resources engineering, the sizing of reservoirs depends on accurate estimates of water ow in the river that is being impounded. For some rivers, long-term historical records of such ow data are difficult to obtain. In contrast, meteorological data on precipitation is often available for many years past. Therefore, it is often useful to determine a relationship between flow and precipitation. This relationship can then be used to estimate flows for years when only precipitation measurements were made. The following data are available for a river that is to be dammed:

Precipitation, cm 88.9 108.5 104.1 139.7 127 94 116.8 99.1
Flow, m^3/s 14.6 16.7 15.3 23.2 19.5 16.1 18.1 16.6

(a) Plot these data.
(b) Fit a straight line to these data with linear regression. Superimpose this line on your plot.
(c) Use the best-t line to predict the annual water ow if the precipitation is 120 cm.
(d) If the drainage area is 1100 km2, estimate what fraction of the precipitation is lost via processes such as evaporation, deep groundwater infiltration, and consumptive use.

A3-mm-thick panel of aluminum alloy (k 177 w/m-k, c 875 j/kg-k and ? = 2770 kg/m) is finished on both sides with an epoxy coating that must be cured at or above t,-150°c for at least 5 min. the production line for the curing operation involves two steps: (1) heating in a large oven with air at ts,0-175°c and a convection coefficient of h, 40 w/m2. k, and (2) cooling in a large chamber with air at 25°c and a con- vection coefficient of he 10 w/m2.k. the heating portion of the process is conducted over a time interval te which exceeds the ime required to reach 150°c by 5 min (h = r + 300 s). the coating has an emissivity of ? = 0.8, and the temperatures of the oven and chamber walls are 175 and 25°c, respectively. if the panel is placed in the oven at an initial temperature of 25°c and removed from the chamber at a safe-to-touch tempera ture of 37°c, what is the total elapsed time for the two-step curing operation?
