Acovered steel (unit weight = 500pcf) tank, 45ft inside diameter × 30ft high and with 0.75in. wall thickness, is filled with liquid (unit weight = 60pcf) up to a height of 29.5ft. the tank sits on a concrete (unit weight = 150pcf) foundation of diameter 46ft and thickness of 2ft. the foundation bottom is 2ft below the finished surface elevation. the soil consists of 10ft thick soft, normally consolidated marine clay above a very thick layer of gravel (> 30ft thick). the geotechnical data of the clay are cc = 0.52, cr = 0.08, cv = 0.08ft2 /year, and w = 48%. the groundwater level is 2ft below the surface. assume that the foundation is flexible and that the soil above the groundwater level is saturated.(a) make a sketch of the soil profile with the tank resting on its foundation.(b) calculate the primary consolidation settlement under the center of the completely filled tank.(c) calculate the times for 50% and 100% consolidation to occur.(d) calculate the primary consolidation settlement if the tank was loaded to half its capacity and kept there for 2 years.(e) calculate the rebound if the tank is now completely emptied.
