For the screw clamp shown, a force is applied at the end of the handle 3½ in from the screw centerline. the ? in diameter handle is made of cold-drawn aisi 1006 steel. the screw is ¾ in- 10 unc and is 8 in long, overall. the maximum possible length of screw in the clamping region is 6 in. (note: unc screws have a thread angle of 30 degress and dm = dp.)

(a) what screw torque will cause the handle to bend permanently? (note you can assume the moment arm for bending is from the outer edge of the screw’s shank to the applied force) answer = 238 pounds inch

(b) what clamping force will the answer to part (a) cause if the collar friction is neglected and if the thread friction is 0.15? (note: in reality, one would also have to consider other modes of failure: buckling of the screw, thread failures, etc. for this question, just consider bending of the handle.) answer f = 3,134 pounds

(c) the collar, which in this case is the anvil striker’s swivel joint, has a friction diameter of 1 in and a frictional coefficient of 0.15. what is the clamping force produced by 8 lbf applied to the handle at a radius of 3½ in from the screw centerline? answer = 186 lb

(d) what clamping force would cause the screw to buckle? answer = 14.6x103 pounds ( use the mean diameter of the screw in your calculations)
