Methyl nitrate, CH3NO3,is used as a rocket propellant. The skeleton structure of the molecule is CH3ONO2: The N and three O atoms lie in the same plane, but the CH3 group is not in the same plane as the NO3group. The bond angle C-O-N is 105° and the bond angle O-N-O is 125°, One N-to-O bond length is 120pm and the other two are 136 pm each. a. Draw a Lewis structure of the molecule showing its geometrical shape.

b. Describe the bonding scheme and the probable atomic (including hybrid) orbitals
involved.
c. Explain why all three N-to-O bond lengths are not the same.
d. Is the specie a polar molecule? If so, show the direction of the net dipole.
