States of matter-solid, liquid, gas, or plasma-are the common forms in
which matter exists in the universe. When a substance goes from one state
of matter to another, the process is properties of a substance change, but the
chemical composition does not. When water in the form of ice melts, it
looks different on the macroscopic scale, but its chemical composition has
not changed on the molecular scale.
