A qualitative reaction for sulfur dioxide is the discoloration of the aqueous potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution. When sulfur dioxide is passed through this solution, aqueous sulfuric acid (H2SO4), aqueous manganese(II) sulfate (MnSO4), and aqueous potassium sulfate (K2SO4) are formed.
