An element M reacts with another element X to form . In terms of loss or gain of electron, identify the element oxidized and reduced.
I need help in understanding this question, I know what a redox reaction is in terms of loss or gain of electron. However, I am not able to solve this question. I think that's maybe because the oxidation state or valency is not given for the unknown elements. Like, how do I know if the element is gaining or loosing electron when I don't know it's valency.
I repeat, I need to UNDERSTAND this question, I already know the answer but am just confused about how to solve it...

Silver tarnishes as silver metal reacts with hydrogen sulfide, h2s, in the air. in this reaction, dark silver sulfide, au2s, covers the surface of silver. when silver is polished, this coating of silver sulfide can be removed from the surface. this makes the silver shiny again. enter the coefficients that balance the tarnishing reaction equation. (type 1 for no coefficient.)

If we compare and contrast electromagnetic waves with sound waves, all but one statement is true. that is a) sound waves require a medium to travel while electromagnetic waves do not. b) electromagnetic waves can travel through the vacuum of space while sound waves cannot. c) electromagnetic waves must have a medium in which to travel, but sound waves can travel anywhere. eliminate d) sound waves must bounce off of matter in order to travel while electromagnetic waves do not require matter to be present.
