What is a Hypoxic Zone and why are they important

Dead zones are low-oxygen, or hypoxic, areas in the world's oceans and lakes. Because most organisms need oxygen to live, few organisms can survive in hypoxic conditions. That is why these areas are called dead zones.

There is a difference in how a dead zone is defined. For scientists it refers to low-oxygen areas, normally on a coastline, caused by human activity. For sailors a dead zone is one with no wind, no current and no sea life. And these days, with significant amounts of plastic waste.
