In CSI: Miami season 7, episode 24, there is a deceased victim floating in a swimming pool contaminated with sodium hydroxide. The concentration of sodium hydroxide was high enough to eat through glass. When the CSI associates realized it was an alkali, they knew they needed to neutralize it so they could retrieve the body. They sent one of the team members to the local grocery store to purchase vinegar. Then they proceeded to pour the vinegar from four-liter jugs into the pool, dropping the pH from almost 13 to exactly 7.0, all within a few seconds all without any stirring! Using your knowledge of chemistry, comment on whether or not the events described in the episode of CSI: Miami could take place. Additional information: The volume of the swimming pool is 100,000 liters. Common household vinegar is 5% acetic acid, and its molarity is 0.833M. Acetic acid (CH3COOH) is also called ethanoic acid, and has a pH of approximately 2.5.
