It is rock where the layers are stacked up. Generally this layered structure is feature of sedimentary rocks, so we reserve the term "rock strata" for sedimentary  rocks.

These are used to identify the age / geological time scale.

These rock strata generally have a small portion of any fossil like teeth . a part of limb, a part of any body part etc.
