A microscope refers to an apparatus, which has an application in observing objects that are too small to be witnessed with the help of a naked eye. The science of observing and assessing small structures and objects by using such an instrument is known as microscopy.  

There are different kinds of microscopes and each exhibits a unique function. All the different kinds of microscopes are essential as not all the experiments need a similar kind of magnification. For example, for dissections, low magnification is adequate, thus, a dissecting microscope function very well, on the other hand, for observing single cells the 1000 fold magnification of a compound microscope is more than enough.
