Look at the structures of the two possible aromatic esters proposed in the lab manual (methyl salicylate, methyl benzoate). While the experiment we did (hydrolysis to the acid followed by the mp determination) is a perfectly acceptable way to identify the unknown, identification could also have been done with spectroscopy. Recommend a spectroscopic technique and describe how you would use it to establish the correct structure.
