You are a High School Chemistry detective and you have been assigned a case involving acids and bases. Keep in mind that because you are in high school, you do not have access to the “normal” scientific equipment that an adult Chemistry detective would have. You still need to solve the case anyway, using the Internet for information. You also need to develop tests that you could perform with materials found in your house or at Target/Walmart. Because no one on the Internet will sell to someone in high school (I know this is a lie, but just go with it, people), even something sold on Amazon is off limits. Target/Walmart/Grocery Store would be the only places available. Your Case:
A former disgruntled Chemistry teacher by the name of Mr. White has left a box of 5 chemicals in his old classroom. It is your job to find the identity of these chemicals to see if how they can be properly disposed of. Mr. White is known to be a shady character, so there could be dangerous things in the bottles.

Your Task:
Design a series of experiments (at least 5 per solution) to guess the properties (and thus the identities) of these chemicals. You must explain why you are using the test and what scientific property of the chemical you are trying to uncover. Because we are starting the acids and bases chapter, one of the tests you design must be a pH test, but because you are a high school detective, you have no access to indicators or pH paper. You will have to figure out a way to measure pH using common household stuff. THIS IS ONLY ONE TEST THOUGH!!! You will perform this test on ALL of your chemicals, and you still need to design FOUR OTHERS to test your chemicals properties.

Your Grade:
You will need to turn an assignment with your series of tests, why you chose these tests (what chemical properties they would show), the procedures for them, and the data you hope to collect and the conclusions you could draw from the data that would give you the identity of the chemicals in the box.

Your Info:
Solution #1:
Color: Clear
Odor: No Noticeable Odor
Feel: Wet

Solution #2
Color: Clear
Odor: No Noticeable Odor
Feel: Wet

Solution #3:
Color: Clear
Odor: Slightly aromatic (smells good) & organic (smells like food)
Feel: Wet, slight burning sensation on skin

Solution #4:
Color: Clear
Odor: Acrid
Feel: Wet, pronounced burning sensation on skin

Solution #5:
Color: Clear
Odor: Acrid
Feel: Wet, pronounced burning sensation on skin, slippery
