The hardness of the shell of the eggs can be determined by the amount of calcium carbonate CaCO3. The calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid 2HCL according to the following reaction:
CaCO3+ 2HCL ➡ CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O
- 0.412 grams of clean and dry eggshell is reacted with an excess of hydrochloric acid, obtaining 87 ml of CO2 measured at 20 °C and 750 mmHg.
1- determine the percentage of CaCO3 in the eggshell.
2- calculate the volume of 0.5M hydrochloric acid left over if 20 milliliters were added.
Data:
Mr(CaCO3)= 100
R= 0.082
