|A titanium ore contains rutile (TiO2) plus some oxides of iron and silica. When it is heated with carbon in the presence of chlorine gas, TiCl, is formed. TiCla is a liquid and is distilled
from the
mixture.
TiO2 (s) + C(s) + 2 C12 (g) → TiCl4 (g) + CO2(g)
When 19.4 grams of the ore is heated with carbon and chlorine, 20.5 mL of TiCl4 is
recovered.
(TiCl4: Density = 1.73 g/mL; bp. 136°C, mp. -24 °C).
A) If the typical yield of the reaction is 85.0%, assuming all TiO2 in the ore reacts,
what is the mass of TiO2 in the titanium ore?
B) what is the mass percent of TiO2 in the ore?
