Se tiene una taza caliente sobre una mesa y, pasado un tiempo, el te esta frio. ¿Cómo podemos explicar ese cambio de temperatura? Las moléculas del te tienen interacción con las moléculas del aire. Como tienen diferencia de temperatura, estas moléculas tienen contacto térmico hasta el punto que se mueven con la misma velocidad, haciendo que las moléculas del aire tengan mayor movimiento (aumento de temperatura). A su vez, las moléculas del café comenzarán a moverse más lentamente porque pierden energía interna (su temperatura disminuye). Después de un tiempo, el te y el ambiente (aire) no experimentarán más mecanismo de intercambio de energía (calor) y tendrán una misma temperatura porque experimentan una misma temperatura y con ello un equilibrio térmico.
