The atomic number of Ca is 20 and its electronic configuration is $\left[ {{\text{Ar}}} \right]{\text{4}}{s^2}$ . This indicates it has two valence electrons in it. The atomic number of O is 8 and its electronic configuration is $\left[ {{\text{He}}} \right]{\text{2}}{s^2}{\text{2}}{p^4}$ . This indicates it has 6 valence electrons in it. In order to fulfill their respective octets, calcium loses its two electrons and these are gained by oxygen. As a result, Ca gets converted to ${\text{C}}{{\text{a}}^{2 + }}$ and O becomes ${{\text{O}}^{2 - }}$ .

The formation of cation occurs as follows:

The formation of anion occurs as follows:

${\text{O}}+{\text{2}}{{\text{e}}^-}\to{{\text{O}}^{2-}}$

The overall chemical reaction for the formation of the ionic compound is as follows:
