When a formation of chemical bonds takes place sharing or transfer of electrons takes place. This is because some elements looses electrons and some elements gains electrons so as to attain stability of fully filled electronic configuration or complete octet.

Here, carbon atom has 4 electrons in its valence shell and need 4 more electrons to complete its octet where as oxygen atom requires two more electrons to completes its octet.So, carbon by sharing its both electron pair with two oxygen atoms forms a stable product that is carbon-dioxide.
