What does the word liquid mean in science

In science, liquid means a phase of matter in which atoms or molecules can move freely while remaining in contact with one another 

A liquid is one of four states of matter. The particles in a liquid are free to flow, so while it has a definite volume, it doesn't have definite shape. That is why you may already know that liquids take the shape of their containers.
