To extend study of molecular binding equilibria to binding of gases to solid surfaces.

the binding of molecules in the gas phase to a solid surface is important in catalysis and chromatography. if we designate the molecules in the gas as a and the unoccupied surface as s, then this "binding" equilibrium is a(g)+s⇌sa where sa represents surface occupied by the adsorbed a molecules. for this binding equilibrium the adsorption equation is: v=vmpp0+p, which is called the langmuir eqution. in the langmuir equation, v is the volume of gas adsorbed onto the surface and vm is the volume of gas adsorbed which results in monolayer coverge, i. e. complete coverage of the surface by a layer of molecules a one molecule thick. also, p is the pressure exerted by the gas onto the surface at equilibrium and p0 is the equilibrium pressure when half the surface is covered , which occurs when fb=vvm=12 .

a)

in a study of gas adsorption onto solid surfaces, the volume of adsorbed gas v is measured as a function of the pressure p. which equation is a linearized form of the langmuir equation that would allow you to obtain vm and p0 from the slope and intercepts?

pv=vmp−p0v ; x=v , y=pv
vp=−vp0+vmp0 ; x=v , y=vp
vp=vp0−vmp0 x=v , y=vp
vp=vmp+p0 ; x=p, y=vp
