Ethylene and chlorine (in the vapor phase) are fed to a cylindrical reactor (r-100) fitted with a condenser supplied with chilled-water-supply (cws). the reactor contains a pool of dichloroethane (in the liquid phase) with a homogeneous catalyst dissolved in the pool. in the reactor dichloroethane is produced according to reaction no. 1 above. the reaction is exothermic and the reactor condenser condenses any c2h4cl2 that vaporizes due to the heat of reaction. the reactor is operated at 1.5 atm. 2. the c2h4cl2 in the reactor exit stream is pumped to 26 atm into a vaporizer and vaporized. the vaporizer tube bundle is supplied with low pressure steam (lps). 3. the vaporized c2h4cl2 is then fed to a natural gas (ng) fired pyrolysis furnace. the c2h4cl2 is cracked in the furnace to form the vc product and hcl byproduct. the crude product stream exiting the pyrolysis furnace also contains unreacted c2h4cl2. 4. the crude product stream exiting the pyrolysis furnace is quenched in a quench tank. a quench tank bottoms pump recirculates the tank material through a pump-around cooler supplied with cws. the quench tank system also operates at 26 atm. there is an overhead condenser on the quench tank that condenses the vapor stream exiting the quench tank to a liquid using refrigerated oil supply (ros).
