The next series of questions will focus on the titration of the amino acid lysine (abbreviated lys). by the end of this question i hope that you will have (1) a better understanding of pkai (2) a better picture of the changes that are occurring during a titration; and (3) a better understanding of titration curves. the pra values for lysine are: pk(-cooh) = 2.18 pkz (-nh3) = 8.95 pkr (r group) = 10.53 a. think back to the equilibrium expressions that we went through in class. what does the value of the pk, actually indicate? (not looking for a math equation or chemical equation-looking for a written explanation.) to have a b. during the course of a titration, assume that you are starting at the lowest ph and add base (oh) to gradually reach the highest ph. because you start at the lowest ph, there is an excess of (circle one) protons / hydroxide, and as such the amino acid would exist in its most (circle one) protonated / deprotonated form. c. in the box labeled "a" below, draw the species of lys that would exist at the lowest ph. write in the charge of this species in the oval below the box. d. fill the box above the first equilibrium arrow with the pkq for the first group to change protonation state. (related to question "a", think about what this pk, value over the equilibrium arrow really means.)
