How are reaction and products related in a chemical reaction?

Reactions are the first compounds from the chemical equation. If you mix them they form a reaction (chemical) and once they're mix they form new compounds which are the products. Sometimes some compounds decompose instead of joining with other common like H2O in electrolysis they decompose in H2 and O2.
