Electromagnetic energy is the is the energy that travels in form of transverse waves produced by the perpendicular oscilations electrical and magnetic fields.

An important characteristic of electromagnetic energy (waves) is that they do not need a material medium to propagate (travel) but they can travel in vacuum. That is how the sun light gets to the Earth through space.

Depending of the wavelength and frequency (which are inversely related)  each electromagnetic wave has different amount of energy, involves particular risks and finds different applications.

Among other uses, we can mention: radio waves and mcirowaves are useful for communications, in infrared transmits heat, visible light permits see the objects, ultraviolet may be used in security systems, x-rays and gamma rays have medical uses.
