If I am correct, the distance between what a child can accomplish on his/her own and what he/she can accomplish with assistance from a more knowledgeable other is referred to as the zone of proximal development, or scaffolding, according to Vygotsky, a famous psychologist. There are some things that children can do by themselves, and this is important for them in order to become a bit more independent, which will help them in the future. However, when a child cannot do something on their own, they will need help from somebody who has more experience. Both of these ways are important for a child to learn and develop further.
