The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an agency of the U. S. government, was concerned about the lending practices of BancorpSouth; they suspected that racial and ethnic minorities were being given less favorable treatment than whites. To test their suspicions, they sent a number of undercover investigators in to apply for home loans. They found that requests for financing to purchase homes in predominately white neighborhoods were granted more often than requests for funds to purchase homes in areas where most residents belonged to a racial or ethnic minority group, even when the applicants were similarly qualified. They also found that whites received more favorable loan terms--specifically, lower interest rates--than African Americans with comparable work and credit histories. The pattern was found to be too widespread and systematic to be the work of particular loan officers. Which term best captures what was taking place at BancorpSouth?
