PASSAGE13 Almost everything bought nowadays has to be broken out of its box, tube, packet, carton or tin
before it can be used. Non-returnable wrappings impose serious strains on the local authorities
whose responsibility it is to collect and dispose of rubbish. Tax-payers have to pay larges surrounding
money to deal with the processing of the huge tons of refuse. The destruction of waste is use
difficult as much of the packaging consists of materials which stubbornly refuse to be broke
down naturally by decomposition. Expensive incinerators have to be installed and the smoke
they produce cause pollution of the atmosphere. Packaging, too, in the fonn of litter spoils the
environment we all share.
Industry and selling agencies, however, continue to introduce more and more packaging every
week. One large agency argues its views without any trace of apology that cigarettes, wrapped in
tinfoil and placed in a box, retain their flavour better and have a longer shelf-life than products
less carefully packaged; products sold in jars are protected from contamination which would be
bound to occur if they were handled continually by shop assistants or intending purchasers. the
cost of wrapping goods carefully is reflected in their high prices, but money spent on ensuring
greater freshness and the higher standard of hygiene achieved by good wrapping is well spent
(a) In two sentences, one for each, state two problems that wrappings create for the citizens (b) in two sentences, one for each , state two advantages of wrapping goods
