Consider an economy in which there are two goods, 1 and 2, whose prices are pi > 0 and p2 > 0, respectively. The two goods can only be consumed in non-negative amounts x1 and t2, respectively. A consumer has preferences over R2 which are represented by the utility function The consumer's income is I > 0. (a) Formulate the consumer's utility maximization problem, find the first- order conditions for utility maximization, and find the Marshallian (un compensated) demand functions ri(Pi, P2, I) and r2(P1,P2, I) for goods 1 and 2, respectively. (Note: Use the Lagrangian method. Assume that the budget constraint holds with equality and that the solution is in terior (i. e. x1 > 0 and r2 > 0), thus disregarding the non-negativity constraints on x1 and x2.) Check that the second order conditions are satisfied
(b) Now formulate the corresponding expenditure minimization problem and find the Hicksian (compensated) demand functions r(p, P2, U) and r£(Pi, p2, U) for the two goods, where U 0 is some arbitrary level of utility. (Note again: Use the Lagrangian method. Assume that the solu- tion is interior and that the other relevant constraint holds with equalitv. Do not check the second order conditions for this problem.)
(c) Compute the indirect utility function V(pi, P2, I) and the expenditure function E(P1,P2, U).

Alandowner and his neighbor purchased adjoining undeveloped lots. after both built homes on their respective lots, the landowner suggested to the neighbor that a common driveway be built where the two lots joined. the neighbor agreed. the landowner and the neighbor split the cost of constructing the driveway and entered into a written agreement to equally share the costs of its upkeep and maintenance. the agreement was recorded in the county recorder's office. two years later, the neighbor built a new driveway located entirely on his lot. the common driveway, which the landowner continued to use but which the neighbor no longer used, began to deteriorate. the landowner asked the neighbor for money to maintain the common driveway, but the neighbor refused to contribute. three years later, the neighbor conveyed his lot to a friend. the friend entered into possession and used only the driveway built by the neighbor. by this time, the common driveway had deteriorated badly and contained numerous potholes. the landowner asked the friend to pay half of what it would take to repair the common driveway. the friend refused. the landowner repaired the driveway and sued the friend for 50% of the cost of repairs. will the landowner prevail?

(05.04 mc) a 2012 report from the u.s. surgeon general stated: "another common practice is strategically locating tobacco-related marketing materials where young children will be exposed to them. tobacco industry executives acknowledge that products and advertising should be placed at eye level (pollay 2007), but in california, 48% of stores had at least one cigarette marketing item at or below 3 feet from the floor (feighery et al. 2001)." it was also noted that 25% of cigarette displays were next to candy. in addition, a national study found that about one-third of the stores had tobacco ads at low heights. after california banned counter displays, some stores place cigarettes in transparent displays so product brands could still be seen. why did some stores use transparent units to display the cigarettes? (3 points) to comply with the new rules while still encouraging cigarette purchases via visual exposure to ensure children and minors are not exposed to cigarettes and their eye-catching packaging to minimize exposure to humidity, extending the shelf life of the cigarettes' tobacco to reduce the occurrence of shoplifting, since cigarettes are high-revenue items
